Five Things Feminism Has Done For Me

From kadath

1. Birth Control. BIRTH CONTROL. Good god, the revolutionary improvements in my life made by the availability of birth control, from being able to afford college to being able to have a responsible sex life. I probably wouldn't even know there was such a thing as a responsible sex life if Feminists hadn't forced the states to teach me. Hell, I wouldn't even have been born had my parents not been able to wait as long as they did to get married.

2. Equal Marriage. The idea that my marriage partner is my equal. That my spouse is my choice, regardless of race, religion, or gender, and that they and I choose how our relationship is defined. The paths before us are profoundly variable, and only tpau and I have any business choosing which ones we take.

3. Emotion. Yes, the range of emotions allowed by men to be expressed in public owes a lot to Feminism. Feminism has allowed me to express emotions other than anger, pride, and shame in public, to cry when I'm sad or patriotic, to explore the tenderness and vulnerabilities of my soul.

4. Sexuality. As has been noted elsewhere, the gay rights movement probably wouldn't even exist for another century or so without the Feminist movements proceeding it. I would not have the tools to even know about my sexuality until societal pressure had probably forced me into a hapless marriage.

5. Sleepovers. Yeah, this one's a bit of a cop-out, but it's true that my social life would be a lot more complicated if my female friends had had to be driven home when staying over late rather than risk being perceived as a whore. It's nice that I can stay over at tpau's apartment without her being perceived as a whore. It's easier on my family life that my sister can have a male roommate without her being perceived as a whore.

So, if you have diverse music taste and pay attention, you hear all sorts of neat music that are played in the background. I just saw two ads in a row with amusing background music.

An SUV ad with music by Morningwood.
A UPS ad with music by The Postal Service.

The first one is pretty funny, but the second is downright witty.
