Time Event
Livejournal Writer's Strike
As I mentioned the other day, there are forces at work organizing a content strike for Friday, March 21, 2008 UTC (which starts 8:00 PM Eastern). The demands are as follows:

  1. Restore basic accounts for new account creation.

  2. Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources.

  3. Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change.

  4. Homophobia, misogyny, and racism must not be a part of the decision making processes about appropriate content of the site, including what user interests are deemed appropriate.

Now, it's no secret that this strike is really just a snit from lj's always-whiny user base, but I'm getting pretty tired of people telling me that there's nothing I can do when companies that I rely on enact asinine policies. I'm sick of the air of inevitability that comes from the eroding customer service, reliability, and, put simply, value, of basic services. Yes, it's their company, and I'm not their slave driver. But I'm the one paying them. I'm the one in charge.

Livejournal's revenue stream comes from two things: The content that we create and the page view statistics that show advertisers that said content attracts viewers. So from 8:00 PM tonight until 8:00 PM tomorrow, I'm not going to post or comment and I'm not going to view anyone else's posts or comments. I'm going to be reminding SUP, in the only way that matters, that they are not the only one who gets to make demands.

This strike's demands aren't great, but the fact that we, the users, can and should make demands, cannot be overstated. Anything that encourages the masses to see themselves as the ones in power is a good thing. It's high time we started to demand the things we all want before we forget how to make demands at all.
